In 2021, UCI (University of California, Irvine) was awarded AASHE STARS Platinum rating with a score of 88.59, the highest in the world up to date! This is the second time UCI has been awarded AASHE STARS Platinum, the last time in 2018.

What is AASHE STARS?

So let's start with AASHE. AASHE was founded in 2005 as The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in the Higher Education. It is a non-profit membership organization that empowers higher education faculty, administrators, staff and students to become effective agents of change and drivers of sustainable innovation, leading the transformation of higher education institutions to sustainable development.

STARS is a project of AASHE, which stands for Sustainability Tracking,Assessment & Rating System. With more than 900 participants in more than 40 countries, the project is the most widely recognized public assessment of the sustainability of a college or university in the world. Participants through more than 1200 qualitative and quantitative evaluation test to report results in the field of 18 - research, engagement, investment, dining, affordability, wellbeing, purchasing, leadership, curriculum, air, water, waste, grouds, planning, energy, transportation, innovation, buildings.

Wendell Brase

He is Vice President of Sustainable Development at UCI, leading UC in implementing the UC Carbon Neutrality Initiative, co-chair of the UC Global Climate Leadership Council and chair of the UC Energy Services Council.

For 25 years, he provided leadership for an award-winning sustainability program in his role as Vice Chancellor for Administrative and Business Services. UC Irvine has received California’s highest environmental award, the Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award, in 2008 and again in 2013; has earned numerous accolades for sustainability, including a 2009 Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Leadership Achievement Award and their 2014 Climate Leadership Award; and has been on Sierra magazine’s Top 10 list of greenest campuses for the past seven years, coming in at No. 1 in 2014 and again in 2015.

As a member of I2SL (International Association for Sustainable Development Laboratories), Wendell has been to China for several times to participate in I2SL China summit events and work with its Chinese members to promote the sustainable development of Chinese laboratories.
